Comments From GIFT Participants
From a Young Married Man:
Don Beebe drew record attendance for a recent "religious education" class. The man who created the Lambeau leap and helped the Packers win the 1997 Super Bowl spoke to over 1,600 people at the last GIFT session. With unwavering attention, a crowd who knew about Mr. Beebe’s successful football career listened to his story about family and faith that led him to the NFL. An excitement throughout the night was present with every family I saw from eating together to a great presentation to getting to meet a Packer great. But although Mr. Beebe’s celebrity status (especially in Packer country) was the factor that drew record crowds, including myself, the night was focused on faith. And faith is exactly what Mr. Beebe challenged each and every one of us to exercise and make part of our decisions and lives.
So far my GIFT experience has been larger than life! The excitement revolving around Frank Runyeon, Don Beebe, and faith has been lacking in the Catholic Church. The sessions have led to many discussions for myself and my family, not only about the presenters, but about our faith. So, thank you to everyone involved in bringing these two amazing presenters to St. Dennis. I can’t wait to find out who will speak at upcoming sessions!
From a High School Student:
Because of my experience, I do not believe weekly religion classes are necessary nor are they beneficial. I feel that the students attend because their parents make them and also see classes as weekly commitments like school; something they are required to attend and therefore, do not apply themselves. The time is also an issue. By the time the class finally finds order, thirty minutes of the student’s attention is not enough to teach them about faith. I have friends who go to other churches in the Madison area. They have weekly religion classes and do not like it. They feel that they are not really learning about God and His workings.
This year, the first year of GIFT, I have noticed I’m actually listening to the speakers at the sessions. The speakers have good stories and lessons to share with us. This year has been the first time I’m “listening” to my faith. I also like the GIFT sessions and new religion set-up because it gives me time to spend with my family. Being the ordinary teenager I barely have time to say “hello” and “good-bye” to my parents and sisters during the week. My weeks are so busy with school, sports, work, and other various extra-curriculars that on the weekend, I like to spend time with my family and friends.
From an 8th Grade Student:
I thought it was amazing that when Don Beebe wanted to be on a football team he tried so hard and never gave up.…Even though he had nothing at times he knew that it was part of God’s plan. If he wouldn’t have been so close and so sure of God plan, he would’ve never gotten to play in six Super Bowls. After hearing his story I realized even though I might have other priorities I can still be with God. He has a plan for all of us. Also, even when you think you have it bad, your situation can always be changed with God’s help. God is always watching you and will always be there for you.
